The main changes in The Amended OHS Act Bill 2020 highlighted below:

For the first time, the focus is on the application of a process (safety management system), rather than simple reference to a policy.

  1. The focus is generally on tying up loose ends, clarifying processes and polishing the Occupational Health and Safety Act so that it reflects inclusivity, clears up uncertainties of previously overlooked, focuses on current industry health and safety challenges and terminology.

  2. Reinforcing of accountability and responsibilities, (i.e) the duties of the CEO, - health and safety representatives and health and safety committees.

  3.  Addition of stakeholders, for example SANAS and advisory forums.

  4.  The inclusion, description and reinforcing of general ethical business practises in terms of role player and stakeholder conduct.

  5.  Updating of linked legislation, jurisdiction and liability.
