IntroductionOccupational Health Monitoring, e-Learning Training Course

This course focuses on the monitoring of health exposure in the workplace pertaining to the health of individuals or groups of workers. Candidates are equipped with extensive information to help them understand the objective of Medical Monitoring.
This includes primary prevention in the workplace in preventing known hazards coming into contact with vulnerable and susceptible employees through engineering and administrative controls.

Aim of the Occupational Health Monitoring, e-Learning Training Course

To provide the candidate with initial understanding of the main aims of workplace medical monitoring; what it is and what the difference is between medical screening and medical monitoring. To teach the candidate the fundamental purposes of monitoring in detecting and eliminating underlying causes such as hazards and exposures of any discovered trends which results in a prevention focus. To provide the candidate with fundamental understanding that both workplace medical screening and medical monitoring can contribute significantly to the success of worksite health and safety programs. The candidate will obtain knowledge on why medical monitoring is essential and what the hazardous agents are that need to be identified in the workplace.

The course also outlines the obligations of the employer in conducting and performing medical monitoring in addition to the employer’s duty to provide a safe and health working environment. The candidate will learn when it is advisable to perform medical screening as opposed to medical monitoring and what the benefits are of both. The content provided also includes the formulation and implementation of a medical monitoring program. The candidate will be equipped with the knowledge on the format of medical monitoring pertaining to periodic clinical and/or physiological assessment on workers. The candidate will learn that the aim of such assessment is to detect adverse health effects which may arise from occupational exposures at an early stage so that preventative measures can be taken. The candidate will learn about and understand the process which must be followed when findings on health monitoring are presented and how it can be used to:

  1. Indicate the absence of a significant hazard
  2. The effectiveness of control measures
  3. Which individuals are at increased risk
  4. Baseline medical data
  5. Benchmarks for positive action, and
  6. Opportunities to provide health education.

Course Outcome to the Occupational Health Monitoring, e-Learning Training Course

Upon completion of the course, the attending candidate will understand, and be able to demonstrate, when Medical Health Monitoring is required or prescribed for employees or a section of employees. The candidate will also be able to explain the circumstances under which the employer may require employees to attend a medical monitoring process. In addition, the candidate will be able to:

  1. Identify and be aware of situations and conditions that may affect the employee’s ability to work
  2. Understand the procedural requirements when affected, including the different methods of Medical Health Monitoring
  3. Explain and develop a hazard assessment program which pertains to the management and prevention of workplace hazardous conditions, and
  4. Ensure essential monitoring through a level of supervision as reflected by the severity of risks involved and the ability of employees to avoid them.

Key Content Covered

This course is aimed at ensuring that the introduction to Occupational Health Monitoring program in the workplace is a preventative measure, that correct procedures are in place to prevent exposure, and that the conditions can be managed and employees are encouraged to attend regular medical screenings. The content covered in this course includes:

  1. The identification of Safety, Health, and Environmental hazards including safety responsibilities and accountabilities.
  2. The solving of common problems and decision making through critical thinking
  3. Critical thinking when implementing or creating a safe workplace through the implementation of legislative requirements which recommend medical health monitoring.
  4. Ensuring the implementation of legislative requirements where medical health monitoring is necessary due to concerns relating to unique circumstances of exposure, case reports of disease clusters, media, or political attention.
  5. Evaluation of potential hazards, implementation of required processes to promote the safety and health of employees.
  6. Ensuring that medical monitoring and physiological assessments of specific individuals is performed to detect early effects of exposure to occupational hazards.
  7. Prepare for recommendations for employees to take statutory periodic medical assessments to prescribed hazards including access to medical screening examinations, and
  8. Ensuring that the employer has a well-formulated medical monitoring program available and that all medical and assessment records are kept confidential.

Assessment

The candidate attending the course will be assessed against the outcomes of each element through the completion of a subscribed knowledge assessment. The assessment will cover the essential embedded knowledge as stipulated in the course and will ensure that the candidate can apply the learning to a working situation.

Conditions of enrolment and certification

To gain access to this training program, it is mandatory that the employer subscribe to the SafetyWallet membership subscription so that the learner can enrol to any of the Health and Safety e-Learning training programmes. Attending candidates must obtain a pass mark of at least 75% or higher is necessary in each Modular Assessment. Should these conditions have been met, the candidate will receive an accredited Certificate of Completion.
