Introduction to Planned Task Observations e-Learning Training Course

Planned Task Observation is the term provided for the exercise involved with identifying hazards in the workplace and the subsequent documentation of the control measures to manage those risks.
A Planned Task Observation, or PTO, is not a trivial task although it requires knowledge, consistency, and stringent application by the attending candidate.
It is a legal requirement for organisations to document any health and safety risks that have been identified in the workplace, it is equally important to record the actions that have been taken to reduce such risks.
This course ensures that the candidate is able to meet the requirements in providing a safe and healthy work environment for employees through requiring that task and behavioural observation be routinely conducted.
The course is aligned with the requirements and direction of compliance with a detailed and well-formulated procedure according to a structured Planned Task Observation which will consider the task to be observed.

Aim of the Planned Task Observations e-Learning Training Course

The attending candidate will receive the necessary knowledge based on a loss history of the task and how critical the task is. This is based on the potential production and equipment losses or damages.
The training will determine the guidelines on how the task observation must be completed by the candidate and will be based on written procedural guidelines and whether the task was completed on time.
This course will introduce the candidate to Safe Work Procedures, or SWP, and how to review current ones of the organisation.
This includes making use of a designated observation form and proceed to create a planned task observation and subsequent analysis to document the steps involved in conducting the task.
The candidate will be assisted in determining which employees must be observed including, but not limited to:

  1. New employees
  2. Experienced employees
  3. Poor performing employees, and
  4. Employees that take risks or have risky behaviour.

The course provides the outline of the several forms that planned task observation with monitoring and measuring can take. This will involve a variety of personnel including workers, supervisors, managers, and directors.

Upon completion of this course, the attending candidate will be capable of, and able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge on the preparation for planned task observation in the workplace.
  2. Explain the purpose of a planned task observation, the content, and the importance of listing tasks from occupations.
  3. Explain the critical task inventory compilation, the process of compiling safe operating procedures, the resources required, and the scheduling of a planned task observation.
  4. Explain that the past history should be considered prior to performing the planned task observation.
  5. Explain the consequences of not performing planned task observations according to the specified requirements in terms of safety, health, and production.
  6. Conduct a planned task observation in the workplace by selecting and using the correct tools and equipment during a planned task observation.
  7. Conduct a planned task observation in accordance with specified requirements, record the findings, and provide immediate feedback in accordance with specified requirements, and
  8. Conduct a planned task observation in such a manner that it fosters teamwork and avoids conflict.

Key Content Covered

This course is formulated around the implementation of an organisational Safety Statement and a set of key objectives and targets for the candidate aimed at ensuring good performance through the following:

  1. The identification of Safety, Health, and Environmental hazards.
  2. Solving common problems and making decisions through critical thinking by carrying out specific risk assessments, understanding their extent and thoroughness, determining hazardous conditions, assessing and taking appropriate action.
  3. Evaluation on employees and protecting employees who work on or near areas of exposure to hazards and risks in the appropriateness, replacement, and maintenance of plant and equipment used for safety critical processes.
  4. Preparation for making the workplace safe by developing and formulating critical tasks and the review of health and safety performance.
  5. Interpretation of the contents of performing planned and scheduled task observations, and
  6. The conducting of planned task observations and meaningful recommendations to be made to reduce hazards and risks.

Assessment

The candidate attending the course will be assessed against the outcomes of each element through the completion of a subscribed knowledge assessment. The assessment will cover the essential embedded knowledge as stipulated in the course and will ensure that the candidate can apply the learning to a working situation.

Conditions of enrolment and certification

To gain access to this training program, it is mandatory that the employer subscribe to the SafetyWallet membership subscription so that the learner can enrol to any of the Health and Safety e-Learning training programmes. Attending candidates must obtain a pass mark of at least 75% or higher is necessary in each Modular Assessment. Should these conditions have been met, the candidate will receive an accredited Certificate of Completion.
